Prof. Xiaodong Wen  is the director of the State Key Laboratory of Coal Conversion since 2023. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ICC-CAS) in 2007. From 2007-2010, he conducted postdoctoral research at Cornell University under the guidance of Prof. Roald Hoffmann (1981 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry) and Prof. Neil Ashcroft. From 2010 to 2014, he worked as a Seaborg Fellow at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States. He returned to ICC-CAS in August 2014 as a full professor and Ph.D. supervisor. In 2022, he received funding from the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. He has long been engaged in fundamental research on heterogeneous catalysis, studying the dynamic evolution of catalyst structures under reaction conditions and the quantitative structure-activity relationship through a combination of computational chemistry and in-situ characterization methods. He has revealed the diversity of catalyst structures under working conditions and established theories and methods for the precise regulation of catalytic active phases. His work has supported the development of industrial catalysts for the new generation of coal-to-liquid processes in China. His research methods have also provided fundamental support for low-temperature methanol-water reforming for hydrogen production, water-gas shift reactions, and hydroformylation reactions. He proposed the interdisciplinary development approach of integrating data technology and intelligent technology with catalytic research processes, aiding in the transformation of catalytic process research paradigms. He has established a database for heterogeneous catalysis research, providing new pathways and models for rational catalyst development. He has been published over 200 papers in international journals such as Nature, Science, Chem. Rev., J Am. Chem. Soc., and Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. He has received many awards, including the Top Ten Scientific Advances in China (2017), the First Prize of Technical Invention from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (2019), the "Innovative Person" award from the China Invention Association (2020), and the "China Catalysis Youth Award" (2023).
